Braces Process

While the braces process will vary to some degree depending on the complexity of the case, the type of braces you choose, and other details of your orthodontic treatment, most cases will follow the general steps below:

STEP 1 Free Consultation*

During your free consultation, Dentist will discuss with you your main areas of concern and perform a thorough clinical assessment to determine your orthodontic treatment needs.

A big part of this consultation is allowing us to discuss the different orthodontic treatment options that are most appropriate for you and giving you the chance to ask any questions that you have about each treatment as it relates to your needs. We will talk to you about specific areas relating to your individual situation after careful analysis of the diagnostic records. We feel it is important to analyze each patient’s specific needs, because in-depth planning leads to the best results and higher patient satisfaction.

We will also go over health fund benefits and payment options with you at this time.

STEP 2 Ready for Treatment after Consultation

This is when you have finally decided to go ahead with the treatment, Dentist will take various pictures and will create a customized treatment plan for you based on your needs and treatment goals.

STEP 3 Pre-Treatment

If you need any general dental work done for eg fillings/root canals etc, it will need to be completed prior to starting orthodontic treatment. This will also be determined during your initial consultation.

STEP 4 Banding Appointment

Time to get your braces! Your appointment will last approximately 1 hour.

Getting your braces put on may take a while, but it will not be painful. After cleaning and conditioning the surface of your teeth, Dentist will place the brackets on each individual tooth with a dental adhesive after which the wires and elastic bands will be placed.

Dentist will then give you instructions on how to properly care for your braces and keep your teeth clean during treatment. You may experience some soreness after your braces are put on, but this should subside within a few days to a week. You can take an OTC pain reliever to minimize any discomfort during this initial phase.

STEP 5 Adjustments

You will need to visit the office every 4-8 weeks for an adjustment. During these visits (which are much faster than the initial banding appointment), Dentist will assess your progress and make adjustments as needed which can range from changing elastic bands or wires.

STEP 6 Debanding Appointment

Woo-hoo! Debanding time! After several months or even years of wearing braces, the big day to have them removed has finally arrived!

Getting your braces removed is easy and comfortable. The appointment will last between 60-90 minutes and will include removing your braces, taking a final set of orthodontic impressions, giving you your new retainer(s), and instructions for retainer wear and caring for your new smile.

STEP 7 Retention

The retention phase is the final and longest phase of your orthodontic journey. While retainer wear is graduated (becomes less over time), it is important to continue to wear your retainer indefinitely to prevent your teeth from shifting back out of alignment.
