Tooth Infection

What is a tooth infection?

A tooth infection is a collection of pus made up of dead white blood cells and bacteria.

Why do we get tooth infections?

A tooth infection is usually a result of dental trauma, untreated cavities that spread to the nerve, trapped food in the gums or prior dental work. If left untreated, the infection can lead to serious health complications.

How can it be treated?

The infection can usually be drained and treated with antibiotics. The tooth can usually be saved with a root canal treatment but in rare cases, the tooth might need to be extracted.

If you are experiencing a sore throbbing tooth, this could be a sign you are suffering from an infection in your mouth. Pain and infection from a toothache can be extremely debilitating and if not treated as soon as possible, can become worse. If you are experiencing a high fever, this is an indication that your body is trying to fight an infection. An infected tooth or infected gum is usually the culprit that causes a dental abscess or tooth abscess because of decay.
